Era un po' che non scrivevo sui referendum - o su altro, a dire il vero. Stamattina mi ha stimolato un bel post di Fábio, un italo-brasiliano che invita le persone di simile origine a votare per il referendum.
I brasiliani di cittadinanza italiana sono numerosi. Il movente è una comune storia di migrazioni transoceaniche che nel 1900 ha portato tanti italiani a cercare miglior fortuna in Brasile. Una delle felici conseguenze è che molti brasiliani discendenti da loro richiedono e ottengono la cittadinanza italiana. Spesso la cittadinanza è richiesta per comodità - il passaporto italiano è davvero ottimo per viaggiare o risiedere all'estero - ma altrettando spesso è un modo per rinnovare parte della propria identità famigliare e culturale.
Gli italo-brasiliani naturalmente hanno il diritto di voto in Italia, che Fábio invita ad esercitare in occasione del referendum. Il suo post fornisce utili informazioni su come votare a mezzo posta - della serie "sembra facile, ma non è, però se te lo spiego...":D. Inoltre, ospita un civile dibattito sulle opzioni di voto, stimolato dalla dichiarazione di Fábio sulle sue preferenze.
Insomma, un'altra iniziativa per il referendum del 12-13 giugno che mi è piaciuta, e che condivido con piacere, sperando invogli più persone ad informarsi e votare!

I have not written for quite a bit about our referendum - or about anything else, to be honest. This morning I felt motivated by a beautiful post by Fábio, an Italo-brazilian citizen who invites people with similar orgins to cast their vote for the referendum.
There are several Brazilians with Italian citizenship. This is because of a common history of transoceanic migrations that brought many Italians to Brazil in search of a better future in the 20th century. A happy consequence of this is that many Brazilians of Italian descent request and obtain Italian citizenship. Often they request it out of practical mativations - the Italian passport is a really good option for travelling or living abroad - but equally often it helps to renew one's family and cultural identity.
Italo-brazilians have the right to vote in Italy, which Fábio invites to exercise for our next referendum. His post gives useful information on how to vote via mail - here we go again: "it seems easy, and it's not, but if I give you a couple of insights..." :D. Fábio's post also hosts a civil debate about how to cast one's vote, a debate started by Fábio's choice to declare his own choices.
Well, another initiative for the 12-13 June referendum that I really much enjoyed and happily share. I hope it will convince more people to get informed and vote!

Referendum 12-13 giugno 2011 - Parte 1

Il 12 e 13 giugno tutti i cittadini con diritto di voto sono chiamati a dire la loro sui 4 quesiti referendari riguardanti questioni assolutamente centrali come l'acqua, il nucleare e il legittimo impedimento. Tuttavia, a poco più di un mese dal voto, l'informazione a riguardo è molto scarsa, e spesso confusa.
Scarsità e confusione informativa su questa nuova opportunità di esprimersi sulle sorti nostre e di chi ci seguirà rischiano di ingrossare le fila dei disaffezionati, di spaventare gli indecisi e di rendere il voto quasi un atto forzoso per quelli che invece, irriducibili, andrebbero a votare anche se fosse il 15 agosto.
Per me il voto dovrebbe essere un bel momento di partecipazione collettiva, un mezzo - anche se non il solo - tramite cui le persone possono dare voce alle loro aspettative, posizioni e, perché no?, ai loro sogni di futuro. È per questo, più che per le mie posizioni in merito al si/no ai quesiti, che ho deciso di dedicare qualche post all'appuntamento del 12-13 giugno.
Inizio volentieri con "Voto il 12 giugno". È un sito gradevole, che spiega in modo semplice e abbastanza equilibrato perché votare, come farlo e di cosa trattano i quesiti referendari.
Mi piace per tre ragioni:
- Per quel che ho capito, è un'iniziativa civica: persone comuni che invitano altre persone comuni a votare.
- Usa parole semplici ed educazione, nessuna mania di grandezza o faziosità.
- Fornisce informazioni davvero utili, per esempio come votare se si è all'estero o se bisogna ancora votare per il quesito sul nucleare.
Visitate il sito e condividetelo sulle vostre reti, recensitelo, fatelo conoscere. Serve a fare votare più persone ed a premiare una bella iniziativa!

Dear friends,
this is not a translation of the message in Italian. I want to spend the following lines to invite you to support our campaign to bring Italian people to vote for a really important referendum on the 12-13 June 2011.
In June, Italians will have the great chance to cast our vote in a refererendum (4 questions) on important issues related with the access to water, nuclear power plants in our national territory, and a recent law that allow our national elected politicians to avoid judiciary prosecution until they are in charge (although they will be called to respond to accusations afterwards).
The point is that in Italy the referendum has been and is presently boycotted. Media are avoiding to promote it. Although it could have been scheduled during the same days of our administrative elections (15-16 May), it will be held on different days, costing to the public about 400 millions euro more. Finally, the Italian government has promoted a confusing provisionary legal framework to suspend our legislation about nuclear power, which however does not correspond to a long lasting abandonment of it.
These strategies risk to reduce electoral participation and so bring to the invalidation of the referendum, which to be valid requires that 50% plus one citizens actually vote. It represents a factual - although not formal - discouragement to the exercise of one of our most basic rights/duties: to vote and decide about our present and future in a basic democratic fashion.
This is why I would be happy if people vote on 12-13 June, whatever they decide to stand for. Although I have my opinion about the referendum's questions, I strongly believe that now it is more important to promote participation and engagement much more than my personal preferences. I am aware that we all would benefit from an open debate about water, nuclear power and prosecution rules. They are complex issues and deserve attention. However, I feel that to rebuild the elementary spaces for discussion comes first. Without these spaces and a renewed sense of ownership about our public life, we will not even engage in the debate.
How could you help?
